Elizabeth RUST (née TALBOT) of Waterside (Gas Row), Soham
1911 census...Aged 3, he was at Waterside, Soham with his father Ernest RUST [29] carpenter/joiner; his mother Ada [26];brothers Percy [5] and Arthur [1]; half sister Gladys Rust TALBOT [7]. All were born in Soham. He married Rosemary A NORMAN in 1932 (Newmarket Q2-1932 3B:1074). In the 1939 register they were at Pratt Street, Soham, Frederick a bricklayer and Rose A [16-4-1905] Also there was married Jane STEWART [3-8-1906].There are two closed entries |

After fighting in North Africa with the 1st Army, they then took part in the invasion of Italy. With Monte Cassino holding up the advance, a landing was made
behind the German lines, at Anzio, on January 22nd. American Major General John P. Lucas , having achieved surprise, then wasted it by preparing defences against
a possible counter attack. The Germans under Kesselring very quickly moved every spare unit to encircle the bridgehead. The bloody fighting did not end until
the break out at the end on May and the bridgehead finally being secured on 3rd June, followed the next day by the liberation of Rome. The battalion lost 19 men on the 3rd June 1944 |
